Hi, I'm Spencer 👋

I like to make things work... in software, on the bench, and around the house. I'm a software engineer who spends most of my days building and scaling systems with a focus on .NET, authentication, and database design. When the compiler stops yelling at me, I'm usually 3D printing something, wiring up a Raspberry Pi, or automating another part of the house.

This site is where I write down what i build and what i learn along the way. The name says it: do code that matters. Build something real, ship it, and make sure it helps someone.

Things i've built

• OAuth / SSO. Worked through token exchange and SSO flows end to end. Read the writeup.
• Rust + mixed-OS tooling. Built a custom HTTP proxy in Rust to get corporate VPN working on Linux. Read the writeup.
• Home automation. Sprinklers, sensors, and smart switches that run local first. The sprinkler build & a local first multi sensor.

How i got here

I started out wanting to understand how things worked, and the only way to find out was to take them apart. That turned into a career building software for a living, and a habit of building stuff for fun that never really went away. The line between the two got blurry fast... a camera hack needs Python and OpenCV, a sprinkler needs MQTT and Grafana, and a proxy needs Rust. i dont separate them.

What im after

My goal is simple: build software that's efficient, reliable, and a joy for other developers to use. Then write down what i learned so it helps someone else. If you're reading this, you're probably one of those someones.
