Sony A6000 and A6400 Research: Hacks, Mods and Community Resources

TLDR; This is research blog post for Sony’s A6000 (ILCE-6000) and A6400 (ILCE-6400). Both cameras I personally own and shoot with on a regular basis. Most of this is automated researched reviewed.
1. OpenMemories: Tweak (Primary Hack Tool for A6000)
Repo: ma1co/OpenMemories-Tweak
Status: Does NOT work on A6400 (confirmed by user + GitHub issue #381)
What it does
- Remove the 30-minute video recording limit
- Unlock the language menu (all 30+ languages)
- Disable the NTSC nag screen
- Enable telnet and adb daemons (developer mode)
How it works
The PMCA-RE project reverse engineered how Sony PlayMemories Camera Apps (PMCA) are installed. With knowledge from firmware dumps, settings are stored in a file called Backup.bin. The app can change these settings directly, including ones locked by Sony.
Installation
Requires the Sony-PMCA-RE tool to install the APK onto the camera:
- Install PMCA-RE (Windows/macOS/Linux)
- Connect camera via USB
- Use
pmca-console install -ior the GUI to install OpenMemories-Tweak.apk - App appears in “Application List” on camera
A6400 Incompatibility
- GitHub issue #381: “Tweak do not work on Sony a6400” — users report “No tweaks available” error
- The A6400 uses a newer USB service protocol that the current PMCA-RE doesn’t fully support

Important caveat (2025): The A6400 is a Sony-camera electron / service-mode oddity. GitHUb issue #513 (“Figured it out for my setup (a6400) (windows)”) documents that after entering service mode the device disconnects — that is part of the process. At that point you run Zadig again and the camera re-appears as a “Sony USB Device” in Zadig. This same flow works on the ILCE-A6700, meaning the service-mode entry is shared across newer Alpha bodies even where the app-install path (PMCA) is unsupported.
Workaround for A6400 Language Unlock
Gist: gist (gibilli111)
Method: Uses a different USB service mode approach that bypasses the PMCA-RE limitation. Tested and confirmed working on ILCE-6400. Should also work on a6600 and possibly other cameras of the same generation.
Steps (high-level):
- Install Zadig drivers (zadig.akeo.ie)
- Put camera in mass storage mode
- Switch to service mode via PMCA-RE
serviceshell(device will appear to disconnect — this is expected, see issue #513) - Re-run Zadig to pick up the camera again as “Sony USB Device”
- Apply language unlock patch directly to settings file
- Reboot camera
Additional coverage: This unlock has been confirmed working on a much wider range of newer Alpha bodies than just the A6400/a6600 — the Reddit thread “Language unlock on newer Alpha Cameras (A6400 A6600 A7C A7M3 A7RM3 A7RM4)” r/SonyAlpha thread reports success on A6400, A6600, A7C, A7M3, A7RM3, and A7RM4. Scope note: These service-mode unlocks work on cameras that share the A6400’s generation, but the classic app-install route (opening the “Application List” menu and installing OpenMemories-Tweak APKs) remains the path for older Android-based bodies like the A6000, which do have the full Android subsystem.
2. Sony-PMCA-RE (Reverse Engineering Toolkit)

Purpose: Interfaces with Sony cameras through USB to tweak settings, dump firmware, and install custom Android apps
Three Main Modes
App Installer
- For cameras supporting PlayMemories Camera Apps (PMCA)
- Install custom Android apps (OpenMemories-Tweak, etc.)
- A6000: Supported
- A6400: Limited support (see language unlock workaround above)
Firmware Updater Mode
- Sony cameras can boot from a secondary partition for firmware updates
- Using a custom firmware file, execute code in this mode
- Camera firmware itself remains untouched
- Not compatible with CXD90045 and CXD90057 architectures (firmware is cryptographically signed)
- A6000: Likely compatible (older architecture)
- A6400: Needs verification
Service Mode
- USB mode called “senser mode” used during servicing for calibration
- Can execute code on the running system
- Best camera compatibility
- Requires custom USB drivers (Zadig on Windows)
- Commands available to dump firmware and execute Linux commands

A6000 runs Android internally — key finding (2025)
A dedicated reverse-engineering project by CliffVale — sony-a6000-firmware-research (CliffVale/sony-a6000-firmware-research) — confirms the A6000 is a fully Android-powered camera. Working from Sony’s official updater to a byte-verified raw NAND dump, it documented:
- The camera boots Android with a Sony “scalar/launcher” UI layer on top
- The updatershell route is a clean, non-destructive way to dump the firmware (no soldering, no hardware opening)
- The physical OK-press gotcha is documented so others can reproduce the dump reliably
This matters for anyone doing deeper mods (custom apps, extracting settings, exploring hidden firmware features): because the A6000 is Android-based, the toolchain for extracting and modifying its internals is far more mature than for the A6400.
3. Clean HDMI Output (Webcam Hack)
A6400
Official method: The A6400 has a native clean HDMI out option in the menu:
- MENU → (Setup) → [HDMI Settings] → [HDMI Info. Display] → OFF
- This removes all on-screen display overlays from the HDMI signal
- Works perfectly for webcam use with an HDMI capture device (Elgato Cam Link 4K, etc.)
Webcam software: Sony provides official Imaging Edge Webcam software — the A6400 works as a clean USB webcam (no capture card needed).

A6000
Issue: The A6000 has a software bug that applies a beauty filter to the HDMI output, making it unsuitable for clean video conferencing.

4. Astrophotography Mods (IR Filter Removal)
What it is
Removing or replacing the internal hot mirror / IR filter to capture infrared wavelengths, particularly Hydrogen-Alpha (Hα) at 656nm for astrophotography.
A6000
DIY Tutorial: lifepixel.com
Key hardware detail: The A6000 has only a single 1.33 mm-thick filter in front of the sensor (per Cloudy Nights “Modding Sony a6000”: cloudynights.com: modding sony a6000). For an H-alpha mod you replace that one filter with an astro-grade UV/IR cut filter of the same 1.33 mm thickness — this preserves infinity focus. Removing it entirely (full spectrum) changes optical path thickness and affects focus.
Infinity-focus shim gotcha: In an A6400-conversion video (Dec 2024) the converter notes that after sensor mods you may need new, slightly thinner shims so the sensor shifts forward and focuses to infinity — essential for astrophotography. - Soldering iron and desoldering wick/gun
- Small Phillips screwdriver
- Tweezers
- Canned air
- Lens cleaning solution & tissue

- Disassemble camera body
- Remove sensor assembly
- Desolder/remove the hot mirror filter
- Install replacement IR filter (or remove entirely for full spectrum)
- Reassemble (adjust shims if needed for infinity focus) and calibrate white balance

The decision hinges on whether you want native full-spectrum flexibility (with clip-on/en-lens filters) vs a cleaner Hα response for nebula work.

Note: The A6400 uses the same NP-FW50 battery and similar internal layout to the A6000, so the mod process is likely similar. However, the A6400 is newer and may have slightly different sensor assembly construction.

Considerations
- Full spectrum vs. IR-only: Full spectrum removes the hot mirror entirely, allowing UV + visible + IR. Requires external filters for normal photography.
- Hα-specific filter: Passes Hydrogen-Alpha wavelengths (656nm) plus visible light. Better for nebula astrophotography.
- White balance: Must be recalibrated after mod. Shoot a white card reference frame.
- Warranty: Voided by any internal mod
- Risk: Sensor is fragile. Professional modding recommended if not experienced

Important A6000 gotcha: The A6000 has no “supply power via USB while shooting” option (confirmed in r/a6000, “Using Sony A6000 with USB power supply”: r/a6000 thread). USB on the A6000 is primarily for charging/transfer, not sustained in-use power — so for extended shoots you must use a dummy battery / DC coupler rather than relying on the USB port. Use a dummy battery (NP-FW50 → AC-PW20 coupler) or a cage + extended-battery add-on instead.
A6400
Power hack details:
- 3000mAh power bank = at least 2 full charges of NP-FW50 (1080mAh)
- Sony BC-TRW battery charger for overnight charging
- Carry spare battery for critical shoots
- Note: users who switch to an AC dummy battery often find they no longer need USB charging at all (Reddit a6000/a-series thread). Dummy-battery + AC power is the most reliable path for desk/webcam use.

6. S-Log / Video Hacks
A6400
S-Log2 vs S-Log3:
- A6400 is 8-bit only (internal recording)
- S-Log2 is recommended for 8-bit cameras (PP7: S-Gamut/S-Log2)
- S-Log3 is designed for 10-bit systems (a7S III, FX3, etc.) — not ideal on A6400
- Hack: Use S-Log2 with ITU709 color space for better 8-bit results
Picture Profiles:
- PP7: S-Gamut / S-Log2 (best for A6400)
- PP8: S-Gamut3.cine / S-Log3
- PP9: S-Gamut3 / S-Log3
Exposure tips:
- Shoot +1 to +2 stops overexposed when using S-Log
- Use waveform monitor or zebra to avoid clipping highlights
- 8-bit footage is more prone to banding in shadows — avoid heavy shadow lifting
External recorder for 10-bit:
- Use clean HDMI out (native on A6400) + external recorder (Atomos Ninja V, etc.)
- Can record 10-bit 4:2:2 from A6400 via HDMI
- This is the best “hack” for video quality on A6400
A6000
S-Log support: Limited. A6000 does NOT have S-Log2/S-Log3 picture profiles.
- Use PP1-PP11 (standard gamma curves)
- For log-like footage, use external LUTs in post-production
- Clean HDMI out workaround (PMCA-HDMICam) + external recorder for best quality
Video limitations:
- 30-minute recording limit (removable via OpenMemories-Tweak if it works)
- 1080p60 / 1080p30 / 720p60 (no 4K)
- No S-Log
7. Timelapse / Intervalometer
The short version: the A6400 has a native built-in intervalometer, while the A6000 does not — it needs an app (or external trigger) to shoot intervals.
A6400 (native)

No further firmware updates have been released since v2.00. Sony has moved on to newer models (A6600, A6700).
A6000
Latest firmware: v2.00 (released 2015)
- No significant new features added in later updates
- Camera is EOL (end of life) from Sony’s perspective
Note: Firmware updates may remove some custom tweaks (OpenMemories-Tweak settings, etc.). Back up your camera settings before updating.
Firmware update gotchas
- A6400 USB connection issue: Many users hit “camera not recognized by firmware updater.” Changing the USB LUN setting (USB LUN → Single) often resolves it. There is a June 2025 YouTube walkthrough that shows the exact fix — MENU → Setup section (yellow) → USB LUN → Single — so the camera is recognized by firmware updaters and computers again: Fix Sony A6400 USB not recognized by firmware updater (USB LUN → Single) (▶ downloaded — see summary in §10)
- A8000 / a6100A / a6400A (2025): In January 2025 Sony silently launched the Alpha a6100A and a6400A — updated namespaced re-releases of the entry/mid APS-C line (likely a display-panel supply change, per TheNewCamera.co). Anyone buying “new” A6400-stock should be aware the A6400A suffix exists and is essentially the same body. Not relevant to modding, but useful when sourcing a camera to mod.
9. Custom App Development (PMCA)
Overview
Sony cameras (including A6000) run an Android 2.3.7 subsystem for PlayMemories Camera Apps. Developers can create custom apps using:

Sony has fully shut down the PlayMemories Camera App store:

Because of this, the classic A6000 apps (Time-lapse, Smart Remote Control, Touchless Shutter, etc.) can no longer be downloaded from Sony. Two paths remain:
- Internet Archive community backup: The
sony-playmemories-camera-appscollection preserves the APKs. The A6000 apps live at archive.org: Sony%20A6000 - Install archived APKs via PMCA-RE (
pmca-console install -i) — the exact same mechanics as OpenMemories-Tweak. Community posts on Reddit r/a6000 document loading these discontinued apps back onto cameras this way.
This makes owning an A6000 (an Android-based body) significantly more viable for modding in 2026 than newer bodies, since the full app ecosystem + OpenMemories toolchain still works on it.
